I met Gene back in the early 60's in Newark New Jersey, my home town. I am a B3 player and Gene and I had the same agent, Joe Hathe, Suburban Attractions and worked many of the same places and our paths crossed frequently. I didn't see him for many years when I relocated to Las Vegas and only once when he played the Blue Note here in Vegas with two of my dear friends Joe Lano and Tommy Check.
My heart is out to Gene's family. He was a fine musician and an even better human being. He was a dinasour and will be dearly missed by all.

The jazz world has lost a true legend. One of the nicest people and greatest Hammond players in the world is now in a better place. No more playing in 'dives' or lugging the B3 through the kitchen to get to the stage. He's jamming with all the greats in Heaven. That roar you hear isn't thunder....it's Gene and his Leslie rumbling away, laying down another jazz standard as only he can. RIP Gene. Look forward to seeing you again some day.

Pattye,
My sincerest sympathies in this time of great sorrow. I played numerous jam sessions and regular jobs before I left Pittsburgh in 1989. He had just finished his new tune of "The Street Preacher" before I left, and we played it forever! I'll miss him tremendously!

To the family of Gene Luwig, I am in shock and disblief upon hearing of the passing of the GREAT Gene Ludwig!
I first heard about Maestro Gene though my brother Pete.
Gene was a TRUE Hammond B3 player- he was fast, master of the ivories and a muscial genius!
I will ALWAYS listen to the GREAT sounds of Gene Luwig and the assorted musicians he played with! I have most of his CDS and several of his LP records which he produced himself!

Dear Mrs. Ludwig,
I and others from here are sorry for the
loss of Gene. We were fortunate to work and travel with him regionally and Europe, before his resurgence that he duly deserved. He was a great inspiration to us and a great friend and a funny funny man to hang with. We loved him dearly and will miss him. I hope in my afterlife, I will get to see and hear him again. I thought he was the greatest, the original, traditional to the genre...and I am just so sad about this. We were unaware of his health situation and if we would have known that we could have been there for him to help him in anyway....we would have been there for him and you. We are so sorry and will miss him dearly. God Bless Gene and you in this time. He will always be in my mind as the best and a musical inspiration to me very personally. Ralph Adkisson

Pittsburgh will always have a hole in its heart losing Gene as Columbus does concerning Hank Marr.
I was fortunate to get to know Gene in recent years and will always feel the loss.
My deepest condolences to Pattye and to the entire jazz circle of friends in Pittsburgh and in the B3 world in general.

Mrs. Ludwig,
I am very sorry for your loss. I drove from Cleveland to catch him at Pangea last year, and I had been planning on driving to see him at the end of this month. In addition to being a monster player, he struck me as being very warm and friendly. He didn't know me from Adam, but spent a few minutes talking to me at the end of the gig. I wish that I had discovered his music sooner, but I am thankful that I got to see him do what he did so well in person.

Hi Pattye,
I am so sorry to hear about Gene. We enjoyed him so much at the Detroit Jazz Fest and seeing both of you at Cliff Bells. I pray that you will be allright. I lost my musician husband too in June of 08 so I can really understand what toll this takes. I thank God for everyday he gave me with my beloved and that thought got me through. I hope you can do the same.
